The man to the left, featured with his pet anteater, is the famous spanish painter and artist Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dali i Domenech, or Salvador Dali, for short. Dali was born on May 11, 1904 in Figueres, Spain less than a year after his older brother, also named Salvador, died of gastroenteritis. Dali came to believe that he was his brother's reincarnation, a theme that appeared in some of Dali's later works, including "Portrait of my Dead Brother" (1963).
Dali's father was a lawyer with strict disciplines, which were balanced out by Dali's mother who encouraged him to develop as an artist. However, Dali's mother died of breast cancer in 1921. The 16-year-old Dali was devastated. Later in his life Dali said that the death of his mother was the hardest blow he ever had to face.
The following year, Dali moved into the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid while he studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Dali received much attention from his peers for his work experimenting with Cubism. Dali also experimented with a style of art called Dada, but his most famous work, and the work for which he is remembered is his surrealist painting, "The Persistence of Memory" (1931).
